![]() ![]() Radio picked up on songs like 'The Downtown Lights' and tastemakers extolled their virtues as a band to watch.Īmongst those that wanted a little more sophistication in their music from the usual pop frothy-foam, the Blue Nile were held in high-regard and Buchanan was widely admired. Perhaps more importantly it really introduced the USA to the band (and vice versa), where the album had a (minor) impact on the Billboard chart, reaching 108. The album broke them out of the small clique of 'those in the know' who prized them as a closely guarded secret. Not only had it been a commercial success - reaching #12 in the UK charts - it had picked up acres of critical praise, perhaps most notably by Stuart Maconie's five-star glowing review in 'Q'. The album itself had been something of a breakthrough album for the trio of Paul Buchanan, Robert Bell and Paul Joseph Moore. Strongly recommend you their Hats album.remains my favourite, even if it sounds a little dated these days.It was a bittersweet period for Scottish band the Blue Nile after the release of their second album 'Hats' in October 1989. There are several BN fans on this Forum, just wish that more people would get to see them play live! Sorry to gush about them, but Im a huge fan and Ive always thought of them as criminally underrated. They have only perfomed ONCE live on television in the UK. Quite minimalist each of their first two albums only contains seven tracks!Ī Walk Across The Rooftops was their first album, and was a big hit with music journalists and industry people, but never performed well in the charts, due to the bands lack of visibility and well-known stage fright which has prevented them performing more in public. They are much more an album band, although in the 24 years theyve been together, theyve only made four albums and done two small but memorable promotional tours. ![]() ![]() If youre talking about hits, then theyve never really had what youd call ac big hit single. ![]()
